Enrolling at Baringa School

Baringa provides education to students between five and eighteen years of age.
To be eligible to enrol at Baringa, students must be assessed as having a mild intellectual disability, that is – a full scale IQ score between 50 – 70 and verified by the Specialist School Enrolment Verification Service, under the Specialist School Disability Category.
This assessment is conducted by an educational psychologist and is usually arranged through the child’s current school. Students who score over 70 must attend a mainstream school and those with a score below 50 should attend a Special Development School (SDS) like Latrobe Special Development School in Traralgon.
Parents and carers of potential prep enrolments are able to contact Baringa directly to arrange a cognitive assessment. This is best done in Term 1 or 2 of a child’s Kinder year, so assessments can be done early to inform school options.
Baringa provides a Transition Program for students wishing to access the school. Information about the Transition Program can be found on the Transition Page.
Prep Enrolment Requirements
It is a requirement from the Department of Education and Training that parents of all prep students provide birth certificates (evidence of date of birth and birth name), AND Immunisation Entry Certificates (history statement after all preschool immunisations are complete) on enrolment.
Immunisation certificates are available from the local council and The Australian Childhood Immunisation Register. A child is deemed to be immunised when she/he has received immunisations against Diphtheria, Tetanus, Poliomyelitis, Measles and Mumps.

Dual ENROLMENT
Baringa School provides two enrolment pathways for students. Students may attend Baringa School full-time, or participate in a dual enrolment arrangement, attending Baringa School part-time while continuing their education at their mainstream school.
In a dual enrolment arrangement, both schools work together to support the student's learning and wellbeing. Student progress is regularly monitored and discussed through Student Support Group (SSG) meetings involving staff from both schools and the students family.
