Baringa School is committed to creating a culturally safe, inclusive and respectful environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, families and community members. We recognise the importance of reconciliation, cultural understanding and ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and perspectives are respectfully represented within our school community.

 

To support this commitment and the implementation of the Child Safe Standards – Creating Culturally Safe Environments in Schools, Baringa School has developed an Indigenous Calendar and Curriculum Resource.

 

This resource provides a framework for our school community to celebrate, learn, acknowledge and educate through significant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dates, histories, cultures and perspectives. It supports meaningful learning opportunities for students while also building the cultural knowledge and understanding of our staff.

 

The significant dates included in the calendar have been selected through consultation with the school’s Koorie Engagement Support Officers (KESOs), local Gunaikurnai Elders and representatives from the Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC).

 

Each significant date is supported by age- and learning-appropriate educational activities for students, along with professional learning opportunities for staff. These resources help ensure our recognition of significant events is meaningful, respectful and connected to ongoing learning and reconciliation.
